Ed Davey presented a spirited and passionate summary of the LibDems’ achievements in five years of the Coalition to the MCA Boardroom Breakfast, both overall and with respect to his brief as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. He naturally presented the theme of the party as a balance between the extremes of either of the main parties and pointed out how successful the Coalition had been i.e. by and large it actually worked.
He pointed out that for the first time a growing economy was accompanied by a reduction in energy consumption and referred to the benign and positive effect of much maligned “European regulation” as well as over £40bn invested in low carbon energy during this Parliament. He took on a range of insightful questions and warned the audience of the importance of winning “hearts and minds” in any forthcoming EU referendum to persuade voters of the benefits of membership.
